Design, text and images Copyright Suzi Anvin, 2008.

Swan lake socks combine two of my favorite things: A delicate lace stitch, and the subtle colors and luxurious softness of Anne yarn by Schaeffer. They would look wonderful in any nearly solid or solid fingering weight yarn of similar thinness. The sock includes 3 lace motifs. The front center is the well-loved Barbara Walker pattern, Wings of the Swan. The side motif echoes the edges of the central motif in a lace rib. The back center of the sock combines elements of both the swan wings and the lace rib into a motif unique to this design that resembles a cable of lace with leaves flowing down the back of your leg. All the laces include strong lines of stitches and holes, which allows the use of a more colorful yarn.

These socks are an advanced design, suitable to a knitter who is comfortable with a variety of lace stitches. The stitch count changes from row to row at the edges of the ribs and back motif, for a more textured look to the sock. Each stitch motif is a similar number of rows, so you will only have to track one row number to find your place in the design. Sock construction is cuff down, with a patterned short row heel and grafted toe. Instructions included for substituting a plain heel.

One size - Women's medium, 8 inch circumference. Fit equivalent to 80 stitches in stockinette on leg, 84 on foot. Pattern includes suggestions for size adjustments.

Yarn: 450 yards of fingering weight sock yarn in solid or nearly solid shade. Shown in Anne by Schaeffer, 560 yards = 4 ounces

Gauge: 10 stitches to the inch

Needles: 2mm (US 0) or size needed to obtain gauge in DPN's, 2 circulars or 1 long circular (magic loop)
