Design, text and images Copyright Suzi Anvin, 2008.

These socks were designed for use with space dyed or hand painted yarns, providing a highly textured stitch motif that is likely to show up even in the presence of wild, bright, or high contrast colors. The diamonds are stockinette, which is separated from the garter stitch background by both lines of decreases and yarn over holes. This causes the diamonds to pop out texturally, and be relatively visible against a background of shifting colors. The design may also work with self striping yarns, particularly those with wide stripes or gradual color changes.

The stitch pattern is easy to construct and follow, and it is not heavily lacy or airy, so may be a suitable choice for socks for any gender. I would class this pattern as an intermediate design, accessible to those who have tried lace before and are comfortable with yarn overs and decreases. Construction is toe up with short row toe and heel, although the stitch pattern would work well top down, with substitution of your favorite heel and toe.

Gauge: 9 SPI in stockinette
Sizes (circumference of sock): Small - 6.7 inches, Medium - 7.8 in, Large - 8.9 in, X-Large: 10 in
