These socks were born after a much neglected second sock made about half a dozen trips to the frog pond, leaving me in a rather sarcastic frame of mind, and in need of successfully conquering an intricate project. Then some LOVELY frog green yarn arrived in my stash from Crystal Palace... and I just couldn't help it, my Frog Pond socks were born. The pattern is a relatively complex lace complete with changing stitch counts, which evokes the lily pads and other greenery floating on a lush pond. There's even an optional knit-purl frog motif to add to your heel flap should you care to thumb your nose at the frog pond as well. The effect of the lace is based more on bold contrast of large solid patches with mesh like background rather than on intricate details of the stitches, so the pattern can be seen even with a relatively colorful variegated yarn.
These socks are NOT intended for the lace beginner. They include 6 different sorts of decreases, 2 stitch patterns each with a different number of rows, both of which change stitch count from row to row. Experienced lace knitters will find the stitch patterns easy to read on their sock, so it is relatively easy to keep your place and enjoyable to knit. Directions are provided in both words and charts. Sock construction is cuff down with a traditional flap heel and grafted toe. If you're looking for a bit of a challenge and love representational lace, these socks are for you!
Gauge: 8 stitches per inch
Size: Finished socks are 8.5 inches wide at given gauge. Length is adjustable. Larger sizes can be created by inserting plain knits between motifs, or by knitting at a looser gauge. Smaller sizes can be achieved by smaller needles and tighter gauge.
Yarn: Approx 375 yards/350 meters fingering weight sock yarn appropriate to gauge. Sample shown in Panda Cotton, 55% bamboo, 24% cotton, 21% elastic nylon, 50 grams =170 yds(157m) Color 9806 - Fern. I used 2.2 balls.
Needles: US 2 (2.75mm) or size needed to obtain gauge in either 5 DPN's, 2 circulars, or one long circular (magic loop or ML).
