Design, text, images and stitch motif Copyright Suzi Anvin, 2008.

These socks were designed to commemorate my first marathon, the San Francisco Marathon on August 3rd, 2008. The motif is a custom-designed lace representation of the famous Golden Gate Bridge (which the marathon crosses twice), and the rest of the sock is smooth stockinette, with all decreases designed to create as little variation in texture as possible for a smooth, comfortable sock for long distance running or endurance sports. Instructions are provided for both a short row heel and a traditional flap heel. The cuff of the sock is also given in both a standard twisted stitch rib and in a picot edge for those who do not like tight bands at their ankles. The goal of this running sock is to provide utter smooth comfort for the foot, while providing an inspiring and interesting pattern on the cuff.

  • Yarn: Aprx 75 grams sock weight yarn in a fiber that is soft and wicks moisture well. Recommended fibers: wool, bamboo, tencel, soy, polypropylene, or other synthetic fibers that wick moisture well.
Socks shown in Panda Silk (52% bamboo, 43% superwash wool, 5% silk) 204 yds per 50 gram skien, Color 4004 - Persimmon Tones. 2 skeins with lots of leftovers. 3 skeins would make 2 pairs.
  • Needles: I used a set of 5 DPN's in size US 0 (2mm) for a gauge of 10 stitches per inch. Pattern is given in many sizes so that you may adjust needle size and gauge to suit your yarn as needed. (cast on is 60, 68, 76, 84, or 92 stitches)
